friday favourites #12

I can't believe I've been doing this for 12 weeks now! Time goes so quickly. This was taken in the Botanical Gardens last Sunday, we got there just as the sun was starting to set and the light was gorgeous. I really love the tone of this, its warm without being overpoweringly yellow! I've been using my camera an awful lot more recently and I'm back into the swing of shooting manually. Its taken practice but I'm finally starting to see a real difference in the results. What do you think?

a day in the peaks

For some reason I just really love abandoned farm buildings.
I want to live here. This is perfect.
I have no idea what they did to these chips but the best chips I have ever eaten.
Saturday was a quiet one, spent most of the day in the library working on an essay. I hate being inside when the weathers fantastic, but needs must and I had a super-productive day. I don't usually like to work at the weekends if I don't absolutely have to, but I woke up feeling all kinds of motivated so I made the most of it!

Sunday was spent exploring the Peak District with the rest of the ES society, the weather was absolutely perfect and a bunch of people turned up so it was all good fun. We had a slight mishap at the bus stop when we realised that the bus timetables changed for the summer...on that day! Turns out that the service we wanted to catch no longer runs on a Sunday (this is so typical of me and public transport!!). Luckily we didn't have to wait too long for a different bus, so we all hopped on and went somewhere completely different!

We spent the day out walking in the countryside, stopped off for lunch in a field, then found a pub for a much needed cold drink! The field where we had lunch was opposite the most perfect house, can I live there please? The village we went to was absolutely gorgeous, full of little one-off shops and proper countryside cottages.  The others all headed back a bit earlier, but me, R and H stuck around and caught the very last bus home. We decided that the best way to end the day would be a wander through the botanical gardens (where I stopped them every 20 seconds so I could take pictures...)and a pub tea. It was the best start to summer!

I took so many pictures! I've shared a few of them here, but my internets been on the fritz this week - I've been waiting for it to sort itself out but it hasn't - so I've only been able to upload these few! I'll be popping the othere up on flickr later in the week if you fancy a look! (and they'll probably end up here as well to be honest!)

I love days of spontaneous plans with friends, they really are my absolute favourites. Roll on summer!

26 March 2012

over here...

Not here! I'm over at Heather's today while she's on spring break - I suggest you all hop on over there and check it out!

I'll be back tomorrow with a bunch of pictures from my adventures this weekend - stay tuned!

friday favourites #11 & a confession

I couldn't decide this week between these two... I took both of them out of the train window on the journey back to uni. I love the fact that I get to travel right through the middle of the countryside, especially when I catch an afternoon train so I can actually see out of the window! I spent the whole journey watching the world go by and listening to some new music. It was the pretty perfect end to a fantastic weekend - and a brilliant start to a busy week!

I also feel like I should confess.... I haven't managed to keep up with the March photo-a-day thingy. I have managed to take a picture every day though, so it hasn't been a complete failure! I don't really like taking my SLR to uni with me when I have a lot of stuff in my bag, it makes it heavier and I'm also worried I'll break it! I see now why people use instagram to keep up with it, I tried using my phone a couple of days but my phone camera isn't the best in the world - if anyone has any recommendations for android camera apps I'd love to know!

this weekend II

I know its thursday now...and so its closer to this weekend than next weekend, but I felt like I took too many pictures last weekend to post all in one go!

These are all from Monday, I went with Mum & Auntie Ang to meet Tania - we were on the hunt for wedding shoes! We got there a little before mum's friend, so we popped into Giraffe for a drink while we were waiting - I'd never been before and I kinda fell in love with it a little bit! There was so much going on, I kinda like restaurants that are fun rather than posh, so the giraffes painted around the ceiling and the world map on the back wall were just up my street!

And they put plastic giraffe's in cold drinks, which totally sealed the deal. I actually thought this was just a stirrer until I drank enough to realise that it was actually a proper plastic giraffe. So cute! I also loved the place mats - got a bit of a thing for woodgrain at the moment!

I caught my train back to Uni from here, and suprisingly it went ok. I think its probably the first time in a long time that I haven't managed to mess up a train journey! I don't know what it is, I just don't get on very well with trains!!

this weekend I

I feel like I should put a disclaimer at the top of this post to warn of the quantity of photos...

I went home this weekend for the first weekend in a while, I left my laptop behind and had a really chilled out weekend. Saturday was full of food and drink, I met a couple of my best friends for coffee in the afternoon and ate some pretty fantastic food with my family in the evening. Sunday was Mothers Day, it was really nice to just spend some time with mum without having to worry about uni work and deadlines. Me and Kev (my step dad) went for a run in the afternoon, we didn't go too far but we made good time so it was a successful outing! I also had ome quality knitting time, I've almost finished the cardigan I'm knitting for mum - its the worst part for me, I get really impatient to finish! The weather first thing monday morning was absolutely beautiful and Zak was quite happy to accompany me for a wander round the woods with my camera.

Sometimes I really need to just run home for a few days to put everything back in perspective and chill out a bit. I come back really mentally refreshed. I really need to figure out how to do that here!

friday favourites #10

I haven't really taken that many pictures this week, I've been spending most of my time in the library working on an essay and catching up on reading. Which means that my iPod has pretty much been stuck in my ears the whole time, so this picture kinda represents my whole week! I'm absolutely loving Christina Perri's album, I highly recommend you checking it out!

I'm off home this weekend and I'm leaving my laptop behind, so things will be a little quiet around here while I spend some quality time with the family - have a great weekend!

14 March 2012

I need your help guys...

Indeed I do! So, here's the deal - during the Easter break from Uni, I'm going on a field course to Western Ireland (so excited!) and I'll be gone for 8 days. Instead of writing a ton of posts in advance and scheduling them I thought it would be cool to get some guest posters on here instead!

As you may (or may not) know, I'm studying for a degree in Environmental Science. A lot of people look at me quite blankly when I say this, or they immediately begin to tell me their views on global warming. I'm not really sure why this is! I think for a lot of people they assume that the 'environment' automatically means climate and therefore I must be studying global warming/climate change. I blame the media for this, but that's not really the point...! Yes, there are parts of my degree that touch on these issues, but for the most part my degree is about the science of the natural environment - i.e. plants, animals and rocks. This may sound boring to some people but I absolutely love it.

I do have a theme in mind that I would love people to stick to, but this will remain a closely guarded secret unless you email me, then I will reveal my master plan to you ;) I'm sticking with a theme for two reasons... a) to make it a little bit easier for people to come up with something and b) I think its really interesting to read  different peoples views on things! So...if you'd like to get involved please email me at - I'll wait to hear from you!

11 things

I think these posts are really fun, I love reading them on other blogs so I was really happy when Jasmine tagged me! The only downside being, that most of my favourite bloggers have already done this :( So instead of tagging people again, I'm just going to leave it open, so if you wanna take part then just leave me a link in the comments!

1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them that you've tagged them.

11 Random Things

1. A day without injury for me is incredibly rare.
2. I have an incredibly vivid imagination, I daydream and literally lose myself in completely fabricated scenarios. This also may be craziness. But I'm pretty sure its not.
3. My mood is usually directly linked to the weather. If its sunny I'm happy and I get irrationally annoyed when the weather is bad.
4. I sleep with my curtains open.
5. I could live out my life in the town I was born in and be perfectly happy.
6. My handbag is a mysterious place of random items. Its a long standing joke with my friends.
7. I really don't like ladybirds. They're just weird. And evil. Like really evil. They're definitely planning to take over the world, but people don't understand the danger. It concerns me.
8. I like to write lists. Of everything. Sometimes even of the lists I need to write.
9. I really don't like being hugged.
10. Some days I have a really strong urge to just pack a bag and take off somewhere.
11. I both love shoes and think they're overrated. By this I mean, I love shoes but I don't like wearing them.

Questions from the wonderful Jasmine

1. If the world ended tomorrow, rate your level of preparedness from 1-10. Then justify it.

The people that I love know that I love them. I'm perfectly happy for the world to end as long as they hold that knowledge. Cheesy? Yes. But its true!

2. {Niina awkwardly inspired this question...} If you had a choice to either freeze to death or burn to death, which would you pick? Why?

Freeze. I would prefer my body to shut down than be in unimaginable agony. Although, I'm pretty sure frostbite would be painful, but then again... you tend to just go to sleep when you start to freeze to death. I think I'd prefer that.

3. You're only allowed ONE drink for the rest of your life {and it can't be water} - what is it?

Well if the worlds ending tomorrow then thats not too much of a big deal now is it? ;) Probably Cranberry juice. I really love cranberry juice.

4. What is one skill that you wish you were better at?

Oooh, tough one. Casual conversation with people I've never met - I really admire people who can just strike up a conversation with anybody.

5. What is directly to your right?

My notepad, mouse, a water bottle and paintbrushes. Fun stuff.

6. Which would you choose between as a pet: baby seal or baby elephant? {Don't worry, they never age or grow}

Whats with the difficulty of these questions?! I think a baby seal probably, I love the water so it'd be like having a swimming buddy! As long as it wasn't too little to swim, 'cos then that'd be a little boring.

7. What is the sport, that if your parents had pushed you, you'd be at Olympic level for by now?

Tennis. Although, my parents would never, ever have pushed me like that!

8. Replace the words in the brackets: I like {pina coladas} and {getting caught in the rain}. I also enjoy {long walks on the beach} and {romantic dinners watching the sunset}.

Haha, can I not just like, leave that sentence as it is? No? Fine.

I like tequila and summer barbecues. I also enjoy random adventures and curling up with a good book.

9. Best book you've read in the past 6 months?

A Game of Thrones. I really wanted to say the Hunger Games trilogy, but as much as I adored them... A Game of Thrones is just a beautifully crafted novel.

10. Which Harry Potter house do you think the Sorting Hat would place you in? Why?

Is it cheating that I found a website to do this for me? I'm sorry, I just don't know the Harry Potter houses that well... It put me in Hufflepuff.

11. And because HP is a good note to finish on, Ron or Harry?

I actually cannot decide. I'm sorry! Neither?

My Questions

1. What is your favourite thing about yourself?
2. What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
3. The best sandwich filling?
4. If you could pick any career in the world what would it be?
5. Where do you wish you were right now?
6. Do you have a favourite meal?
7. If you had to choose just one for the rest of your life... having books to read or music to listen to?
8. A song you wish you'd written?
9. Dog person or cat person?
10. One thing you couldn't live without?
11. Favourite instrument?

march #photoaday update 2

Still loving this. Some days it worked out more practical to just use my phone - like when I suddenly realised it was 5pm & when insomnia drove me to an early morning walk. I'm not gonna beat myself up over not using my SLR, the whole point of this is to catch the little moments right?

So, in order...

 8. Window - This is the view if I half climb out of my loft window. Yes this was scary. And I was slightly convinced that I was going to drop my camera, but the view is pretty amazing!
 9. Red - R gave me the leftover napkins that he bought for his anniversary so I made bunting. Its cute and crappy and I love it.
5. A smile - This misty sunrise.
7 .Something you wore - I love that every single bead on this bracelet has a memory to go along with it.
10.Loud - This is a total lie. I'm really paranoid about losing my hearing so I usually keep my headphone volume really low. But if I wanted to play my music loud...
 6. 5pm - This was a really good 5pm!

Are any of you doing this? How are you finding it? I'm really curious to find out how other people are approaching it!

09 March 2012

friday favourites #9 {& a question}

I found it hard this week to pick pictures that weren't the result of the #photoaday prompts! This shot didn't really turn out how I wanted it to - I was trying to capture the steam rising but it didn't really work out. I do really like the tranquility of the shot though. And its tea, so its pretty much a winner!

And the question, I was just wondering - how do you guys prefer people to reply to comments? Like, would you rather they replied directly to you on their blog or email you? I'm curious!

Happy Friday! xo

frankly: blogging is so weird #IWD

I find myself thinking this constantly. Often when I'm writing emails to women that I consider to be friends, who offer support, inspiration and love when I need it. Women that I've never met, yet I can talk to freely. Many people would find this weird. They would warn me about stranger danger and the perils of the internet. They would question why on earth I decide to record parts of my life online, for the world to see.

And I understand where they're coming from. I find it so, so hard to explain the blogging thing to people who don't blog. Its like an exclusive club! You're either in and you get it, or you aren't and you don't! And when they think its weird, I understand that viewpoint as well. Of course, this is weird - how could it not be? But nobody ever said that weird meant bad. Different? Sure. But bad? I'm not convinced. We are living in an increasing connected and digital world and to me it kind of makes sense that the way we form and build friendships will change and begin to reflect that. People run businesses from opposite sides of the planet - why not have friendships too?

"Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather is one of those things that give value to survival."
- C. S. Lewis

Of course, I'm not arguing that our friendships should all be formed and maintained online, I don't think that would be healthy. My 'offline' friends are some of the best people on this earth, they're a gift and I'm extraordinarily thankful to have such a wonderful group around me. But I'm also thankful for my 'online' friends - I love getting to know people who are having such different experiences of life. Its a beautiful thing.

Its fascinating to me, to see how other people live their lives. Its inspirational to see people who choose, every day, to be happy and positive about the world. Its motivating to see people who choose to live their lives with purpose and make every second the best it can be. But its magical to find someone who lives hundreds of miles away, whom you'd never have a chance of meeting, and just click with them.

"A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked."
- Bernard Meltzer.

Today is International Womens Day. A day that started out as a protest, a demand for equality and respect has now become a celebration of just how much has changed, how much has been achieved. If I was more politically aware I would write about the specifics, but I'm not.  I'm aware that there's still room for improvement, of course there is, there always will be - but I don't believe that improvement is limited to women. Its everybody. I believe in equality, regardless of gender, race, religion or disability.

That said, I felt like today was the perfect day to write a post about the world of blogging. All of the blogs that I follow are run by women - many of these feature heavily the men in their lives but for the most part my experience of the blogging world is a community of women. Beautiful, positive and inspirational women - here's to you.

This is part of Frankly: a series of longer articles where I explore the way I think about things. If you have any suggestions, or there's anything you'd like to see my thoughts on then please let me know!

05 March 2012

stills from this weekend

Had a couple of those lazy productive days this weekend, got tons done but didn't seem that busy. We were meant to go out Friday evening but ended up staying in with H for a quiet few. Just before 10 we made a supply dash which resulted in an entire bar of chocolate and a whole bag of marshmallows being consumed in melted combination. Perfect. M also proved it was possible for a bar of chocolate to be consumed in less than a minute and R continued his success as a mixologist with a vodka, orange juice, ginger ale, soy sauce, hendersons relish and lime cordial combination. It sounds like the worst thing ever but it was pretty damn good! We really should learn to trust his mixing instincts, he's obviously a natural.

Saturday afternoon I took my camera out for a wander round my neighbourhood to check off the prompt from March #photoaday, it was late afternoon and the light was perfect - the sun dipped below the horizon just as I walked past this old church. Post 7pm was an ice cream deal featuring Game of Thrones - I was kinda skeptical about whether the series would live up to the books but so far its doing a pretty good job. Then, for some completely obscure reason we watched Starship Troopers. Why this occurred I shall probably never, ever know.

Sunday was filled with studying and knitting, meeting the KnitSoc girls for a chat is just the perfect thing for a Sunday afternoon. We had tickets for a comedy night Sunday eve that included dinner from the union bar so food and laughter ensued. To be honest, it was a pretty awesome weekend.

March #photoaday Update 1

Sharing these pictures is going to be really simple - once a week on a sunday.  I'm 4 days in and I'm loving it, absolutely loving it. So here goes...

1. Up
One of the buildings I have lectures in, its the tallest university-owned building in the UK and has the worlds largest paternoster lift - pretty cool huh?

2. Fruit
This is an apple. I'm eating the apple.  It was a pretty good apple.

3. Your neighbourhood
The weather was literally perfect for this prompt!

4. Bedside
Those would be fairy lights in a jar, its way cheaper than buying a bedside lamp!

03 March 2012

taking it one step further

So some of you might remember when I started the friday favourites series, I explained that I wanted to get back into photography and start capturing things regularly again. I've found it really helpful - I think creativity is like anything else, the more you do it the better at it you are. I've started carrying my camera everywhere with me again and I've been taking a LOT more pictures!

This month I'm going to take that a step further - with the March photo a day challenge. Its almost like a mini version of Project 365 but each day you have a prompt which you interpret however you want. Some people may find this a bit restrictive but I'm often grateful for a starting point - whether its something to take literally or just a launchpad for other ideas. I think often familiarity can result in a lack of inspiration, so I'm really looking forward to having a reason to look for the details in everyday things. So basically, this should be fun! Challenging maybe, but fun. I've deliberately not studied the list in detail - I want this to be a pretty spontaneous project, not something that I have planned out in my head a few days before.

For the complete lowdown, I suggest you pay the lady behind all of this a visit!

I don't have instagram so I'll be shooting everything with my SLR. I haven't figured out yet how I'm going to display everything, I'm hoping I'll get a brainwave soon! Have any of you done this before without instagram? How did you display everything?

Let me know if any of you are taking part - I'd love to see what you come up with!

friday favourites #8

Yesterday was such a beautiful day, its amazing how a little bit of sunshine can completely transform things. It felt like long walks and BBQ's on the beach with friends weather.  I took a really slow walk down to Uni with my camera just to see what I could find. I sometimes find it hard to photograph things that I see all the time - I think the familiarity of the scene always makes the pictures seem a little bland to me. Does anyone else get that?

I had good intentions of spending most of the day in the library and getting ahead with reading...but it got to 3pm and I really couldn't take being stuck inside any longer! I had every intention of continuing work in our back garden, but got super distracted by sugar cravings so me and M wandered into town to locate biscuits.  The mission was successful.

Have a fab weekend everyone! xo

01 March 2012

I would like to thank...

I had a completely different post lined up for today, but this morning when I started catching up on my Bloglovin I discovered that the lovely Becky from A Little Ones Adventures  had nominated me for the Liebster Blog Award! If you haven't come across her blog yet, I really recommend popping over and having a look around - her photography is beautiful!

I tried to do a little bit of research to find out exactly what this award is - and who started it - but nobody seems to know! Its such a shame, it would be really nice for everyone who has been nominated to get in touch with who ever they are and say a big thankyou!

For me, this is a huge honour, which may sound a little bit silly, but its such a great feeling when someone lets you know that they enjoy and appreciate what you're putting out into the world. I started this blog just as a way to document my life, but its fast growing into a way to meet some amazing new people as well. This community can be so supporting and accepting - I feel really lucky to be a part of it and to connect with you guys in the way that blogging allows me to do. So I think what I'm trying to say is, a massive thankyou to every single one of you (:

There are a few rules that go along with this award:

1.Thank the person who nominated you and provide a link back to the site.
2.Copy and paste the Liebster Award logo to your blog.
3.Choose five more up-and-coming bloggers who you feel deserve the award and hope that they will accept and nominate in turn  five more.

Choosing just 5 bloggers has taken me almost an hour! I read quite a lot of blogs, and every single one that I choose to keep in my Bloglovin' is there because I find it inspirational in some way. Blogs can be such a huge source of positivity and inspiration - and I think its fantastic that there are so many people out there that are adding to that. However, the rules say I have to choose....

1) Living Loved - Lauren takes some fabulous pictures and she's so friendly! Every now and again she posts about what she's baking - guaranteed to make your mouth water!
2) Moments of a Libra - Anna's photography is stunning - and she's a really talented artist as well. Also, she's a Libra which is definitely the best star sign ;)
3) The Sun was high - NoĆ©mie is a graphic design student in Canada, her blog design is B-E-A-utiful (say it like Jim Carrey and all will be good) and she has the sweetest sense of fashion.
4) Abigail Force - Abigail blogs about pretty much everything - her constant being that she is hilarious. Seriously, this girl will make you smile.
5) For My Grandfather - I'm quite convinced that me and Jasmine are in fact twins that were separated at birth....She's hilarious, and one of the friendliest people I've come across in the blogosphere.

So there you are - thats my final five! I'm planning on getting my 'daily reads' page sorted as well this week - so you can check out some other fabulous blogs you may not have come across yet!

And on that note, I'm off to let these lovely ladies know they've been nominated - have a fabulous thursday! xo
