Random thoughts on blogging

generally I think the the 'keep calm' stuff is way overdone. But I love this

Pretty much what the post title says to be honest...

  • People should comment more. Comments make for happy bloggers and new friendships. If someone writes something that resonates with you - let them know! Ask questions, offer opinions - just get involved!
  • Word verification is evil. Chances are I won't comment if you have it because according to the internet I'm a robot.
  • Its impossible to not be selective, we only have so much time that we can allocate to reading blogs and its impossible to read all of them. Read the blogs that you get something out of, be that laughter, friendship or inspiration. Your mind will thank you for it.
  • Shallow as it may be, I like things that are clean and easy to use. Your layout isn't the most important thing in the world but it will probably affect whether or not I stick around to read your stuff.
  • Most of the time it's blindingly obvious if you're not writing as you. Be yourself. People will love you. Don't worry if you're not writing about the same things as everyone else, the world would be a pretty boring place if we were all the same.
  • I still don't understand why people think blogging is such a weird hobby. I just don't get it.
  • Its an amazing thing to have friends that get you, who you can have the most ridiculous conversations with. Friends who listen to your craziest plans and want in on the fun. Its even more amazing when you've never even met
What do you guys think about blogging? Best bits? Worst bits?

  1. Nice little post :)

I also find that word verification infuriating, which is rich coming from me as I don't even know if I have it on my blog! I need to have a look and see. I don't mind it but sometimes it is actually quite hard to read so then I get it wrong making me a robot!

Great blog by the way :)

  2. Totally love this! And agree with it all :) I particularly love the point about writing as yourself. Sometimes this is something that's so hard to do because when you read so many other "voices" out there, sometimes yours can become all muddled up. Congrats on 50+ readers by the way, when did this happen?! X

  4. Well i kind of gave up on my blog... not entirely sure why, just kind of happened. But I love reading other peoples, and its true, I should comment more! x

  5. Sometimes I need a push to comment. To ask to a writer's question or so. Anyway, the layout/photos thing is very important to me. I am a visual type of human being, maybe that's way...

    1. I agree, sometimes I need to feel like I have an opening to comment - I'm not a fan of just leaving "Great post!".

  6. Totally agree with you about word verification! Especially on the iPad, where it sometimes freezes!

  7. oh my gosh, this post is so true! i totally agree with the comment thing! i'm such a hypocrite though because I need to remember to comment too. the word verification comment makes me laugh. and i don't know if i will ever get over being offended by people who think blogging is weird. and it's hard for me to explain why i like it so much too...it's like a whole different world!

  8. Ah Vic, I really missed your posts! So happy to be back :)
And it's true! Comments are the little gifts one blogger can make to another in acknowledging and anticipating in each other's worlds. All across the world. I think it's a really cool hobby!

I think the worst bits are when you're in "a blogging crisis" and you don't know how to go on or how to stop when you have to much stuff going on at work/Uni life. And sometimes it's not so easy for me to get updated on all my fav blogs, because I - apparently - have no blogroll yet, just the blogger bar. Any other nice solution for this, maybe? Bloglovin? Anything else? xx

  9. I completely agree with this post! I blog over on WordPress though so we don't have the comment verification :] After reading these comments I'm quite glad we don't! It just makes me love WordPress even more! I agree with the comments though, people can 'like' your posts and that's great but what did they 'like' about it? I'm shallow like you too, if I don't like your layout then I generally won't read much of your stuff - no matter how well written it may be. The absolute best bit about blogging is being able to write down your thoughts and have them out there! That's why I started blogging in the first place :] Also meeting new people through blogging has been pretty neat :] I've met some amazing people!

    1. I didn't even know about WordPress when I started blogging! I don't think its really 'shallow' to dismiss a blog based on its layout, I think it just means you're more of a visual person. I follow a couple of blogs where the focus is on the writing not the design - and I love them.
You can meet some AMAZING people - you're so right!

  10. It's so nice to come around to your blog again. I haven't visited it in ages.

I definitely agree with the points of making complete strangers friends and about having a clean layout :) I would even go as far as saying that layouts reflect out personalities in the way that some of us like things organized and some don't. I'm definitely a control freak, but I'm also a kind of person who loves the simple solutions.

  12. This could not have been put any more PERFECTLY! I hate when people don't comment or reply back ever. And I only have one other friend that blogs, the rest thing I'm crazy talking to all these strangers :)

  13. I hate that people don't leave comments. I work so hard on my blog and I know people are looking at it! Is my blog that bad? LOL

    1. No your blog is not bad! I think its very easy to slip into the mindset of just flicking through posts, enjoying them but not really interacting with the blogger at all. Sometimes I find myself doing it!

  14. Vic, this post is awesome. I've been blogging for around 3 weeks now and although I love writing and connecting with people online, the hardest bit for me is fitting it in. I've had to miss out on hanging out with friends to come home after work and write. Definitely worth it though :)
